Great Tools for Van Build

The Essential Tool Kit for Your Van Build

When you start your van conversion, you don't need to spend thousands on professional trade tools. For beginners, a budget-friendly range like Ozito is perfect. They are affordable, reliable for DIY projects, and all use the same battery.

Top Tip: Always have at least 3 or 4 batteries. You want one in the tool, one on the charger, and a couple of spares so you never have to stop working.

1. The Versatile Jigsaw

This is the most important cutting tool in your van.

  • For the Roof: Fit it with a metal-cutting blade to cut holes for your roof vents or windows.

  • For Wood: Use wood blades for your floor and walls.

  • Pro Secret: Use a "Reverse Tooth" (Down-cut) blade. Standard blades pull upwards and can splinter the top of your nice wood. A reverse blade pushes down, leaving a perfectly neat, professional edge on the side you can see.

2. The Router (For Professional Edges)

If you want your cupboards to look factory-made, use a router.

  • The Guide: Don't try to "freehand" it. Use a piece of Aluminium Flat Bar as a guide. It's stiff, won't bend like wood, and ensures your lines are perfectly straight.

  • Take it Slow: Never try to cut the full depth at once. Set the router to take just a few millimetres off, then lower it and go again. Deep cuts can catch the wood and "run away" from you.

3. The "Two-Drill" System

Efficiency is key. You should have two drills on the go at all times:

  • Drill 1: Fitted with a drill bit for making pilot holes.

  • Drill 2: Fitted with a driver bit for putting in the screws. If you only have one drill, you will waste hours swapping bits back and forth. Having two keeps your momentum going.

4. Mitre Saw (The Time Saver)

If your budget allows, a Mitre Saw (Chop Saw) is a game-changer.

  • Framing: It allows you to make perfectly square cuts on your framing timber or aluminium in seconds.

  • Aluminium Framing: I highly recommend using Aluminium Framing. It is much lighter than wood, won't rot if it gets damp, and is incredibly strong. Using a metal-cutting blade on your mitre saw makes working with aluminium as easy as cutting bread.

5. Other "Must-Have" Tools

  • Orbit Sander: Essential for prepping your Marine Ply floor before you apply that beautiful varnish.

  • A "Multi-Tool": This is great for those tiny, awkward cuts in corners where a jigsaw won't fit.

  • Clamps (Lots of them!): You can never have too many clamps. They act as your "extra set of hands" when you are trying to hold a heavy cupboard in place while you screw it in.
